Volvo is a brand renowned for its quality, spaciousness and reputation for safety, and while those factors remain as important as ever, this Scandinavian manufacturer has been able to establish itself as a key choice when it comes to electrification.
It was one of the first car makers to sell a plug-in hybrid version of every single model it sells, while the majority of its line-up now features some kind of electrification. This also includes EVs, with Volvo debuting its first all-electric model in 2020 with the XC40 Recharge – a battery-powered version of Volvo’s most popular car.
More recently we’ve seen the arrival of the C40 – arguably one of Volvo’s most stylish cars ever made, and the first that is only sold as an EV. The next few years will see a flurry of new electric models from Volvo, including the EX90 – a seven-seat replacement for the well-loved XC90.
All new Volvo models come with a warranty lasting 36 months or 60,000 miles, whichever comes sooner. During this period, any component failure caused by faulty materials or workmanship will be rectified free of charge by a Volvo dealer. The same warranty period applies for paintwork defects, while there is a 12-year warranty covering rust perforation through any sheet metal body panel.
Electric Volvo models get a more comprehensive warranty, with the battery pack (on both EV and hybrid models) being covered for eight years or 100,000 miles in case of any defects.
New cars from the Swedish firm also come with three years free roadside assistance for anyone driving the vehicle with your permission.

Safety has always been an area where Volvo has excelled, with the brand’s models having a remarkable reputation in this respect. All of its vehicles have performed especially well in Euro NCAP safety tests, securing a five-star rating. Its cars are packed with the latest in driver assistance technology, helping the car to avoid collisions and then reduce the impact of them.
In recent years Volvo’s range of models has also majored on style, with all of its vehicles having an especially smart design, incorporating elements like the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED lights, as well as an upright front end with an eye-catching grille. Volvos are arguably some of the most classy-looking models on the road.
Volvo interiors are another real selling point too, with cabins filled with a range of high-quality materials, including real wood and aluminium detailing. There’s plenty of technology on offer too including a portrait touchscreen that uses an Android operating system, featuring in-built Google services such as Maps and the Assistant voice control system.
Another note for Volvo is that it’s one of the first premium firms set to stop using leather in its vehicles as it moves to creating vegan-friendly cabins and maximising sustainability in the process.
Volvo currently offers two electric cars in its line-up – the XC40 Recharge and the mechanically similar C40. Here are the highlights of each.
The XC40 is Volvo’s most popular model, and by some margin, its success was only elevated with the addition of the electric Recharge model. Introduced in 2020, this compact SUV has a particularly smart look and lends itself perfectly to an EV. It majors on comfort and refinement while being every bit as practical as standard XC40 models. Recent powertrain changes have seen it benefit from an increased range too, with Volvo claiming up to 311 miles from a single charge.
The first Volvo to only be sold as an EV, the C40 is an even sleeker and more stylish version of the XC40, which sits in the increasingly competitive coupe-SUV class. Available in rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations, the latter versions are the main talking point as they pack more than 400bhp, and can manage the 0-60mph sprint in just 4.5 seconds. The C40 Recharge also offers an electric range of up to 315 miles.
