Mazda has somehow managed to carve itself as a mainstream manufacturer that also caters for enthusiasts. Much of this is down to the MX-5 sports car which has over its many generations cemented a reputation for being a sports car that can be used day in, day out. However, much of the MX-5’s DNA has worked its way into its more ‘mainstream’ models from its saloon cars right the way through to its larger SUVs.
It has also taken a real stance on making its petrol and diesel cars as efficient as possible. Often shunning turbochargers in the process, Mazda has always believed there’s still very much a place for ‘conventionally’ powered cars on the motoring landscape.
But that hasn’t stopped it from entering into the EV game, either. In fact, it has applied its similar lightweight ethos that you’d find in the firm’s MX-5 to its new battery-powered model – the MX-30. It’s little wonder why both it, and Mazda’s famous two-seater, share the first two letters of their names. Mazda also plans to launch three new electric cars by 2025 showcasing that it’s still got a big interest in all things EV.
All new Mazda models are covered by a three-year or 60,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first. During this time, owners can have any issues on their vehicles corrected and fixed at an approved Mazda service centre. Paintwork is also covered for three years, regardless of mileage, while there’s an anti-perforation warranty on body sheet metal panels for 12 years.
When it comes to breakdown cover, all new Mazdas get European Roadside Assistance for the first three years of ownership. It covers the UK and Europe, with expenses of up to £100 for either onward travel or overnight accommodation supplied.
Plus, when it comes to Mazda’s EVs, these are covered by an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty for the battery.

Much of Mazda’s appeal centres around the driving experience that its cars provide. Somehow, this manufacturer manages to conjure some of the spirit of a sports car into much larger, heavier models, and it’s largely down to excellent calibration of the steering and gearbox. What do we mean by that? Well, the steering in all of Mazda’s cars feels very well weighted and provides a great sense of connection between the driver and the vehicle.
But there’s also a really high level of fit-and-finish. Throughout Mazda’s line-up of cars, you’re getting some of the best-made interiors around which combine hard-wearing materials with solid build quality that ensures that they feel as though they’re made to stand the test of time. You get some really nice ergonomics, too, with chunky controls that are simple and intuitive to use.
There’s some great technology to take advantage of as well. Mazda’s CX-5 SUV, for example, has an intuitive 10.25-inch infotainment screen, for example, while many models make use of a rotary control dial which makes accessing the display’s various functions a breeze.
Mazda’s electric car line-up currently revolves around a single model – the MX-30. It’s a compact crossover-style model with an upright stance on the road.
It’s been designed as a lightweight model, which means that it’s got a smaller battery than you might expect in order to shed overall weight. Mazda states that you should get 124 miles from a full charge, while a full charge via a regular 7.4kW charger will take a speedy three hours. Hook the MX-30 up to a 50kW rapid charger and a 20 to 80 per cent could be completed in as little as 25 minutes, too.
The MX-30 benefits from loads of standard equipment, including climate control, a head-up display and a heated steering wheel. Plus, there’s a really smart 8.8-inch infotainment display which gets both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration systems and each new MX-30 receives five years of free map updates.
There’s also the option of a new MX-30 ‘range extender’ which uses a clever rotary petrol engine to maintain the electric charge in the vehicle. In effect, the petrol engine acts as a generator for the electric motors which power the wheels, allowing you to go further than the standard electric-only MX-30 model.
