Why choose an electric Jeep?

Think of Jeep and what springs to mind? We reckon you’re already envisaging the sight of a big, chunky four-wheel-drive tackling the mountain ranges of Colorado, or the iconic Willys Jeep that was so transformative for efforts in the Second World War. Whatever you’re thinking of, Jeep is a brand which has an established and rock-solid pedigree in being up for pretty much any challenge thrown its way.

But this reputation is also one of Jeep’s biggest hurdles to overcome. With such a background in big, go-anywhere models, how do you transfer to an electrified age? Well, Jeep is up to the task with its typically robust approach.

It already has a great range of robust models like the ever-present Wrangler and the family-friendly Renegade and Compass, but it is quickly moving to adapt to the need for more electrification in its models. It’s why you’ve got plug-in hybrid versions of all three of those models, combining the off-road ability you’d expect from a Jeep with a cleaner, more efficient powertrain.

Jeep isn’t shying away from the fully electric world, either. It has already launched its Avenger to much acclaim in Europe, blending the chunky proportions that you’d want from a new Jeep with a clever battery-powered motor. It’s part of a wider electrification landscape for Jeep, too, as the brand plans to introduce a total of four fully electric models in Europe by 2025.

What is the Jeep warranty and breakdown cover like? What does it cover?

Though Jeep might have a great reputation for making cars that go here, there and everywhere without fail, it’s always good to have a warranty in the back of your mind should something go awry. Fortunately, Jeep offers a comprehensive warranty including the repair or replacement of defective parts and the labour required to sort it for 24 months, as well as a further 12 months of Retailers Warranty which starts from the car’s first registration date.

Roadside assistance is also included during this time, too, so you know that you’ve got support if you get caught out at the side of the road. Jeep also covers its vehicle’s paint for 36 months and the firm will repair any kind of paint defect that might arise during that time period.

Jeep’s new electric Avenger is covered by a standard warranty and roadside assistance package for three years plus an additional one year valid until the expiry of four years from the date of first registration or 75,000 miles.

What are the key selling points for Jeep?

As we’ve touched upon, a lot of the attraction that people feel for Jeep is all down to that prestigious heritage. Regardless of model, the entire lane up is infused with some of the character of that has put Jeep on the map as one of the creators of ‘true’ off-road machines. Like we mentioned, the firm’s genesis lies with the original Willy’s Jeep, but has gone on to include cars like the CJ 5, Grand Cherokee and, of course, the Wrangler. The latter model is just as famous today as it always has been. Of course, Jeep is now backed by the wider Stellantis group here in Europe, which means that it’s supported by one of the largest car manufacturer groups around. This ownership also means that Jeep can tap into a wealth of expertise and technology, which is how its Avenger electric car has come about so swiftly - it’s actually much the same underneath as cars like the Peugeot e-2008.

But Jeep has also quickly established a great range of plug-in hybrid models which sit under its wider 4xe branding. Headed up by an eye-catching blue colour, the 4xe line-up is a shining example of how Jeep is pivoting to keep its cars as green as possible in an industry which is focused on efficiency. But, in classic Jeep fashion, 4xe models also bring even better off-road capability thanks to the inclusion of an electric motor on one of the axles which gives great versatility when the conditions get sticky.

And it’s that go-anywhere ability which ties modern Jeep models with the past. Even cars like the more road-focused Renegade can still handle a surprisingly large amount of rough-terrain, while the chunky design and short overhangs on many of Jeep’s models mean that they can go up and down steeper slopes than you might expect. It’s all part of this brand’s commitment to being able to go a little further off-grid than the norm.

Electric car model highlights? What’s in the range and what’s popular?

As it stands in the UK currently, Jeep’s electric car line-up is centred around a single model - the Avenger. It’s one of the first Jeeps which has been designed specifically for European buyers, which is why it includes a host of innovations and changes that make it a little more focused towards people on this side of the Atlantic.

As we’ve touched upon, it’s underpinned by a platform which is used by other cars in the wider Stellantis group as well in models like the Vauxhall Mokka Electric. But don’t go thinking that this is some cookie-cutter job, however, as there have been some big revisions to the Renegade in its transition to a full Jeep model. You’ve got shorter front and rear overhangs, for example, while some chunky plastic bumpers aim to make repairs cheaper if you have a car park prang.

Overall, the Avenger is actually shorter than the Renegade, so it’s impressively compact. Despite this, there are loads of storage options inside with all manner of cubbies, pockets and bins. The Avenger’s 380-litre boot is also usefully sized, too, while a split-level design means you’ve got somewhere to store the car’s charging cables.

What about that all-important electric powertrain, though? Well, the Avenger adopts a single-motor setup which develops 156bhp and 260Nm going through the front wheels alone. Coupled with a 54kWh battery you get a range of up to 248 miles from a single charge. Plus, thanks to a super-speedy 100kW charging rating, you could conduct a 0-80 per cent charge in just under 30 minutes. Plug it into a regular 11kW home charger and a full charge can be sorted in five and a half hours, too.
