If it wasn’t for Tesla, electric cars wouldn’t have progressed in the way that they have, so there’s a lot to thank this American firm for. Headed up by Elon Musk, Tesla started out in the 2000s, with its first car being the Roadster – a model created alongside Lotus.
After this, it really hit the jackpot with its bespoke models, with the Model S saloon and Model X arriving as its first mass-market cars, with the Model 3 and Model Y arriving a few years later. It’s these more affordable models that have really driven Tesla’s growth, and they’re now the UK’s most popular electric cars.
Renowned for their minimalist, modern interiors, Teslas also offer great electric ranges, as well as easy charging access thanks to the firm’s bespoke Supercharger network, which are located up and down the country. Add in strong performance and a true ‘community’ feel for the brand, and there’s a lot to like.
All new Tesla models are supplied with a warranty covering its vehicles for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The battery and drive unit get additional coverage on top of this. On ‘Rear-Wheel Drive’ Model 3s and Model Ys, the battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, but on ‘Long Range’ and ‘Performance’ versions of these cars, that mileage period is increased to 120,000 miles.
For as long as Tesla models are covered under the basic four-year warranty period, they also come with free roadside assistance, which is available 24/7 365 days a year.

Tesla has more experience when it comes to electric cars than almost any other manufacturer, and that becomes apparent as soon as you own one of the models. As, while most manufacturers sell petrol and diesel cars alongside their EVs, Tesla has only ever sold electric models.
Tesla’s cars are renowned for their breathtaking performance, which is capable of beating many supercars from a standing start, while at the same time they’re able to deliver particularly competitive ranges – the Model 3, for example, is able to travel for up to 389 miles on a charge, which is great for a relatively compact saloon.
Another key advantage to Teslas is the brand’s dedicated Supercharger network. It’s the only car manufacturer that operates its own charging infrastructure, with its units being widely renowned for their speed of charging and availability – there are usually banks of chargers available at its sites, rather than the usual one or two you get with other providers.
This firm also has a very modern approach to design and its interiors get a very impressive finish. The cabin is dominated by a huge touchscreen that’s super slick in operation and controls the bulk of the car’s features. Tesla also offers advanced driver assistance technology, known as ‘Autopilot’, which is really able to take the stress out of longer trips.
Tesla currently offers two cars – the Model 3 and the Model Y. Here are the highlights of each.
The Model 3 arrived in 2019 as Tesla’s most affordable model, and it’s proven hugely popular ever since. This electric saloon is available in three guises – the standard car, Long Range and Performance.
Offering a maximum claimed range of 389 miles and the capability to go from 0-60mph in just 3.1 seconds (in the case of the Performance model), it’s a true force to be reckoned with in the electric car marketplace.
If you want more space than the Model 3, it’s the ‘Y’ you should look at. Only introduced in 2022, it’s already one of the UK’s most popular cars, with this electric SUV offering a great interior and plenty in the way of practicality.
Like the Model 3, there’s the choice of three versions available, with the Long Range model able to travel up to 331 miles on a charge, while the Performance version lives up to its name with a 3.5-second 0-60mph time.
