If ever there was a car perfectly designed for a city, it’s the Smart car. Brought to market by Mercedes, it’s one of the most innovative cars of the past couple of decades and is a sensational choice where space is at a premium. With the ability to park nose-first in parallel parking bays, it’s little wonder the model has become so popular in crowded cities.
With many Smarts living in towns and cities, it’s an ideal model to be made into an EV, and Smart was one of first to introduce electric models – doing so in 2007 as part of a pilot project. Following this, it became available to the general public in 2009, and a decade later in 2019 Smart became one of the first firms to stop selling combustion-powered models, and began only selling electric versions of its ForTwo and ForFour.
New Smart cars are supplied with a three-year manufacturer warranty with no mileage limit, which covers mechanical and material defects, so long as no modifications have been made, and it’s not a result of wear and tear.
Electric Smart models have a warranty on their battery which lasts for a maximum of 62,000 miles or eight years from the date of registration, whichever comes sooner, and will be replaced if the maximum capacity of the battery is found to be less than 36 Ah.
In terms of roadside assistance, new Smarts benefit from three years of cover. But even after this time, every time it goes into an official Smart dealer for a service, you will receive a further 12 months of roadside assistance.

The main selling point for Smarts is undoubtedly their advantageous size. If you live in a crowded area, or have limited parking, there are few more suitable cars than a Smart Fortwo. Measuring 2.7m in length, it’s substantially smaller than even a regular city car or supermini. It offers great visibility too, while a tiny turning circle makes manoeuvring remarkably simple.
Smarts often appeal because of their style, too. Few cars are as distinctive as these compact city cars, while the firm offers plenty of scope for personalisation, offering various two-tone colour schemes as well as bright colours like Lime Green and Carmine Red. Smart also offers a choice of a cooler ‘Cabrio’ model for those wanting to enjoy that open-air feel.
Despite the size, it’s amazing just how much equipment Smart is able to cram in something as compact as the Fortwo. Standard features include a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, an eight-inch touchscreen and even a reversing camera. A Smart is safer than you might expect too, owing to the model’s tridion safety cell, which is the area surrounding the front door, which is able to absorb impacts and prove far stronger than you might expect something like the Fortwo to be.
Currently, there is just one electric Smart model available – the EQ Fortwo. Here’s what you need to know about it.
Ahead of Smart revamping itself and introducing the new #1 SUV, its sole model is the EQ Fortwo. The electric version of the brand’s well-loved model, this is the iconic ‘Smart car’, renowned for its dinky size and impressive city usability.
Packed with style, you can choose it as both a Coupe and drop-top Cabrio, with each offering loads of equipment and a fun, unique driving experience. The Smart does use a small battery, which limits the range to a claimed 80 miles, but this should still be enough for motorists that only drive around the city.
