What is the Toyota Urban Cruiser?

The Urban Cruiser is a product of a relationship between Toyota and Suzuki. So just as Suzuki’s Swace was a rebadged version of the Toyota Corolla, so the Urban Cruiser is, essentially, a Toyota-fied version of the latest e Vitara.

However, though the running gear might be the same, Toyota has handled key areas including the design of the Urban Cruiser, as well as how the interior is put together. In typical Toyota fashion, there’s a real focus on build quality here too.

What’s it like on the outside?

You might remember the original Urban Cruiser, which was a city-focused car which drew design inspiration from chunky off-road SUVs. It’s much the same story with this new car, too, as with its upright look and block proportions, it certainly looks ready to tackle a new adventure.

It’s got loads of futuristic elements too, including ultra-slim daytime-running lights and large front air inlets which help to improve aerodynamic efficiency.

What can it offer on the inside?

Step into the cabin of the Urban Cruiser and you’ll be met by a large central touchscreen which has all of your key media and navigation functions, as well as smartphone connectivity services in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All cars get features such as a 360-degree parking camera, while an efficiency-boosting heat pump comes included on all models to ensure the best-possible range.

In terms of space, you’ve got a 244-litre boot, though this can be expanded by moving the rear seats forwards on their rails. It boosts that space to 306 litres.

What kind of range does it offer?

There are two battery options available on the Urban Cruiser. The first is a 49kWh pack which brings a claimed range of up to 214 miles, while a larger 61kWh pack increases things to 264 miles. Both models drive the front wheels through a single electric motor.

You can charge at speeds of up to 53kW for the smaller battery or 67kW for the larger version, meaning that a 10 to 80 per cent charge can be completed in around 40 minutes.

Are there any alternatives I should be looking at?
