SUVs have become an incredibly popular choice of car here in the UK. As more manufacturers go on an electrification journey, the battery-powered SUV market has never been so full.
After Ford announced its latest electric model, the Puma Gen-E, will come in at under £30,000 making it one of the cheapest electric SUVs on the market today. So, what other cars in this field come close to that price bracket?
We’ve compiled a list of the best electric SUVs you can buy for under £35,000.
Hyundai Kona Electric
One of the best cars on this list is Hyundai’s Kona Electric. It not only looks good but comes with lots of standard equipment, has the firm’s five-year or 100,000-mile warranty and has proven to be a very solidly built and reliable car.
At this price point, it will get you in an Advance model for £34,995 and it will come with the Standard Range 48kWh battery pack that Hyundai claims can do up to 234 miles.
But, if you can cope with a slightly longer DC rapid charging time of 10 to 80 per cent in 1 hour and 22 minutes, then the Kona Electric is definitely worth a look.
Jeep Avenger
Based on the Stellantis Group’s e-CMP platform, which is shared with the Vauxhall Mokka Electric, Peugeot e-2008 and Alfa Romeo Junior, the Jeep Avenger offers cheeky off-road looks with Jeep's rugged nature.
Due to its small dimensions, the Avenger is easy to drive around town and it can hold its own on the open road. It also features a 54kWh battery pack and single electric motor that develops 156bhp and Jeep claims that the car can do up to 248 miles on a single charge, which for a car of this type is rather impressive.
Renault Megane E-Tech
Renault offers an extensive number of SUVs in its line-up and its cheapest is the Megane E-Tech.
Now priced from £33,995 for the entry-level Evolution trim level, the Megane offers plenty of standard kit, such as a heat pump, 18-inch alloy wheels and a nine-inch infotainment screen.
For less than £35,000, the Megane E-Tech comes fitted with a 60kWh battery pack and electric motor that Renault claims can do up to 285 miles on a single charge. DC 130kW rapid charging is compatible with the car going from 15 to 80 per cent in 36 minutes.
MG ZS EV
Regarded as one of the best-value electric SUVs - and one of Britain's best-selling cars - is MG’s ZS EV.
With prices starting at just over £30,000, the ZS EV offers great value for money and comes with plenty of standard equipment. But, not only that, it has a 72.6kWh battery pack that MG claims can do up to 273 miles on a single charge.
Also, the car doesn’t differentiate itself too similarly to the combustion-powered model, which makes it look more like a conventional vehicle.
Volvo EX30
Volvo is expanding its range of electrified models even further and the EX30 is the cheapest and smallest offering it has, which is battery-powered.
Inside, the car utilises a lot of recycled materials consisting of the upholstery on the seats and a lot of the plastics used on the dashboard and door cards to keep in line with the firm’s sustainable future.
At this price point, you can buy the entry-level car for less than £34,000 and features a rear-wheel-drive single electric motor setup that produces a total of 214bhp and it has a 49kWh battery pack. Volvo claims that this version of its EX30 can do up to 214 miles between charges.
