Hyundai has gone through a serious process of reimagination. Its current crop of electric vehicles are some of the most innovative on sale today and now, there’s a new addition to the line-up with the Ioniq 9.

Arriving as the brand’s largest and most tech-filled EV, the Ioniq 9 has already got people talking - but what do you need to know about it? Let’s take a look.

It has a range of up to 385 miles

This new Ioniq 9 has a claimed range of up to 385 miles, making it one of the best cars in its class when it comes to the amount of distance you can travel between trips to the plug.

Thankfully, all versions of the car are compatible with DC rapid charging, which gives you a charging time of 10 to 80 per cent in just 24 minutes.

It takes design cues from the seven concept car from 2021

Three years ago, Hyundai gave us a hint that it was planning a large practical electric SUV with its Seven Concept car.

Even though this production car doesn’t share the suicide doors as the prototype, this new model does utilise a lot of that car’s features. The wheel arches have a squared design to improve aerodynamics and the same Pixel LED front end has been brought across – with similar design cues to the brand’s smallest EV – the Inster.

Other parts to mention are the Ioniq 9’s flush door handles, digital wing mirrors and a flat tailgate – all to improve airflow over the body of the car.

There are a variety of different drivetrains available

Hyundai is giving the customer plenty of choice when it comes to powertrains. All cars come equipped with a 110.3kWh battery pack, to give the longest EV range possible.

However, from there, you’ve got a series of motor combinations to choose from. There is a Long-range model with power sent to the rear wheels via an electric motor that pumps out 214bhp. But, this version can also be opted with all-wheel-drive thanks to an added 94bhp electric motor fitted on the front axle to give a total of 308bhp.

If you want even more power, Hyundai offers the Ioniq 9 in a Performance variant which features dual electric motors to give a combined power output of 428bhp – which enables a 0-60mph time of five seconds.

The second and third row can be opted with swivelling seats

As an option, the second and third-row seats will be able to rotate to allow passengers to face each other when the vehicle is stationary. This is ideal for charging stops or even on a family day out. It also allows for extra space for occupants to stretch out if they need to.

It comes with vehicle-to-load technology

One important new feature that a lot of EVs are now adopting is vehicle-to-load technology – which this Ioniq 9 also includes as standard.

It essentially means that the car comes equipped with a three-pin plug socket that allows you to hook up domestic appliances to use which then runs off the car’s battery – it can be ideal for those camping trips away when there aren't any electricity plugs available.

There is enough space for everyone’s luggage

Though boot space figures when all the seats are folded down haven’t been revealed yet, what we do know is that with all the seats in place, there is a total capacity of 620 litres of luggage room. Fold the third row down, and that space transforms to 1,323 litres.

Additionally, all Ioniq 9’s come with a ‘frunk’ which gives an extra 88 litres of space – if you go for the rear-wheel-drive version. If you choose the all-wheel-drive model, that space drops to 52 litres. Inside, Hyundai claims that there are storage areas that offer up to as much as 18.2 litres of space.
