Range anxiety is something many people think about before buying an electric vehicle. Whether it’s worrying about where you’lll charge, or how far you’ll be able to get between those charges, it can be an initial point of concern before you dive into the world of EVs.

But with our line-up of electric cars here at My Electric Lease, we know that range anxiety should be a thing of the past and that nearly all EVs can manage the average UK commute without breaking a sweat. Let’s take a look at some of the other factors to bear in mind.

What is the average commute?

The average commute distance in the UK is 19.5 miles, according to the 2022 Commuter Census. That’s for a round trip, too, meaning that most drivers are doing around 10 miles each way to get to and from work.

Of course, there are exceptions to this, with 20 per cent of drivers travelling between 20 and 40 miles per day. However, it’s a very small number that goes beyond this figure.

How far can most EVs go?

Many of the latest electric cars can go for long distances between trips to the plug. Even smaller models can easily manage 150 miles, meaning that you should be able to travel the average commute without issue.

What about charger numbers?

Charger numbers have grown impressively over the last few years. According to leading charging mapping service Zapmap, there were 118,321 devices across 45,561 locations as of February 2026. For context, there were 102,771 chargers available at the end of 2024.

These installations cover a variety of speeds; the emphasis has been on increasing the number of rapid chargers, though, which is why many of the very latest sites have several high-speed chargers. However, the majority of chargers available remain those which offer a slower rate of charge, simply because installing them is easier.

How fast can I charge?

If you’re looking for a speedy charge, then there are plenty of options in the UK. The very units offer up to 480kW which, if you connected them to an EV that could accept this high rate of charge, could deliver a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in around 17 minutes. However, you’re more likely to find chargers that offer between 150 and 350kW, which are both quick enough to charge the average EV from 10 to 80 per cent in under half an hour.

It’s worth remembering about an EV’s rate of charge, however. This is the speed of charge that a car is able to accept. For example, if a car has a charge rating of 150kW, this is the most it’ll be able to accept. Even if you plugged it into a 350kW charger, the most it would be able to charge at is 150kW.
