Vauxhall now offers an electric and hybrid version of every model that it sells here in the UK.
Its flagship SUV, the Grandland, has just received an extensive makeover and offers both petrol-electric and battery-powered options.
The new car is bigger, more refined, better looking and features more standard equipment than the model it replaces.
However, what’s the best model to go for? Do you choose the hybrid or the electric? And, which one represents better value for money?
We’ve compared both versions back-to-back to see which one best suits you.
Powertrains
The hybrid Grandland comes equipped with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is mated to an electric motor. It develops 166bhp and 230Nm of torque – while Vauxhall claim the car can do a combined 51.3mpg and has CO2 emissions as low as 124/km.
The electric version comes fitted with a 73kWh battery pack and electric motor that produces a total of 213bhp and 343Nm of torque. Vauxhall claims that the EV model of the Grandland can travel up to 325 miles on a single charge and that 160kW DC rapid charging is compatible, taking the car from a zero to 80 per cent top-up in 26 minutes.
However, later down the line, Vauxhall will introduce a larger 97kWh battery pack to the electric Grandland line-up, which the manufacturer claims will achieve up to 435 miles between trips to the plug – making it a class leader when it comes to electric range.
Exterior looks
When it comes to exterior design, both cars offer almost identical looks and get Vauxhall’s new illuminated logo and 3D vizor front end.
The car features a tall and slab-sided profile and if you go for a higher trim level, you get a two-tone roof design – livening up the car’s appearance.
In terms of changes, the only reference to split the hybrid and electric models is the EV’s lack of front radiator grille, which is smoothed off.
Interior looks
Step inside and both cars are nearly identical. That isn’t something to complain about, mind you, as the latest Grandland’s interior is a lovely place to be.
All the materials are of high quality and the ‘Pixel Box’ is positioned in the centre console. It’s a cool-looking transparent compartment that doubles as a wireless phone charger.
There is sufficient space in the back for occupants, and up front, there are plenty of storage areas to cater for everyone's belongings.
Driving experience
When it comes to the two cars' driving experience, they do have their differences.
Firstly, the hybrid model does a good job of using its electric motor around town, improving its economy and refinement. When you need to travel at greater speeds, the petrol engine is brought into the equation.
The electric version is effortlessly comfortable and quiet everywhere it goes, plus its acceleration is smooth and composed.
Prices
The big question is, how much is the price difference compared to the hybrid and electric model?
The entry-level Design trim in hybrid guise costs from £33,300 and features equipment such as 19-inch alloy wheels, a 10-inch multimedia infotainment screen, six speakers and DAB radio. The flagship Ultimate hybrid rises to £37,000 and boasts further equipment such as 20-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, a 10-speaker Focal premium audio system and Chat GPT.
However, if you want to get yourself into an electric Grandland, you’ll have to spend a little bit extra. The entry-level Design comes in at £35,945 and features the same standard equipment as the hybrid model, while the top-of-the-line Ultimate electric is yours for £39,095.
Verdict
Which Grandland is best suited for you? The hybrid version is cheaper to buy, looks just as good as the electric variant and comes with the same standard equipment. It’s also lighter and handles better than the EV model. If you’re not ready to make the switch to an electric car, the hybrid model is the one to go for.
However, the electric Grandland represents good value for money, thanks to a recent price cut, and it's smoother to drive and feels more premium, as well as coming with a decent electric range.
