First Drive - EV Review - Tesla Model Y
Tesla Model Y Review
What is it?
Tesla is now a household name here in the UK. Of course, much of the discussion surrounding the Californian tech firm comes from its owner - one Elon Musk - but besides the hype, this is a company that has quickly become one of the real trendsetters in the EV segment.
Building on the popularity of its Model 3 saloon is this - the Model Y. It’s a car which aims to capitalise on the desire for crossovers yet while delivering the same high-tech experience that Tesla has become known for.
What’s new?

This might look like a slightly more quirkily-styled Model 3, but the Model Y actually brings a little extra space than that model. It’s got more headroom, for one, which means that’s a far better choice for taller drivers - and their taller passengers - than the standard saloon.
Plus, with the combination of a ‘frunk’ forward section and a large boot with folding rear seats, there’s up to 2,158 litres of storage space available - more than you’d find in a much larger ‘regular’ SUV.
What’s under the bonnet?

Regardless of which Model Y version you opt for, you’re getting a dual-motor setup which brings all-wheel-drive. It’s a big plus point - particularly in the sodden UK - as it gives a little extra traction when things get slippery. Long Range versions couple these motors with a 79kWh battery which is capable of returning up to 315 miles per charge.
It’s worth noting that one of the big plus points with Tesla ownership is access to the firm’s Supercharger network with around 6,500 chargepoints located across Europe. They’re dependable, too, and offer some of the quickest charging speeds around.
What’s it like to drive?
Even the initial part of driving the Model Y is different. There’s no traditional ‘key’ as most drivers will use their smartphone to unlock and start the vehicle. So all you need to do is approach it, jump in and get going. Once you’re in, there’s a whole of performance on offer and it’s clear immediately that the Model Y is a good degree quicker than most ‘ordinary’ EVs.
It’s got very quick steering mind you and though this has become a Tesla hallmark, it can be a little strange to get used to initially. The whole car is very quiet, too, which makes it very relaxing to pilot.
How does it look?
Tesla’s styling language is pretty simple, really. They’re all very smoothed off and nondescript, to the point where you could argue that they don’t really have any styling at all. However, the Model Y does mix these things up a bit with a higher stance on the road, as well as a sharper boot design.
The one thing they benefit from is recognition - despite this stripped-back styling, you’re always sure that it’s a Tesla approaching you.
What’s it like inside?

The cabin of the Model Y is almost a reflection of its exterior. Things are very stripped back and, as a result, they’re pretty calming. There’s plenty of adjustment when you’re sitting behind the wheel - you can adjust the steering wheel via the mains screen - and the seating position is good once you’re in place.
Those in the rear get plenty of head and legroom, too, while all three chairs get heated seats - something that you really don’t find in many cars on sale today.
What’s the spec like?
Tesla knows how to get one thing absolutely spot-on - technology. You’ve got that recognisable super-large screen in the centre and it’s jam-packed with features and really sharp graphics. It’s all very intuitive to use, too, while the satellite navigation is great for intelligently plotting your route with charging points in mind.
Features such as games and movies might seem like a bit of a gimmick at first, but they’re actually great for passing time when you’re charging the car up.
Verdict
The Model Y feels like the ideal next step for Tesla. It’s got all of the great features that made the Model 3 such a success, but throws in a healthy amount of practicality for good measure. Improved headroom means it’ll be a hit with taller passengers, too.
It’s that access to reliable charging that really makes a difference, however. It’s one of a number of reasons why Tesla continues to top the charts of best-sellers - and the Model Y will only contribute to this.
