What could the future of driving look for UK motorists?

The motoring world is a fast-paced one. Each year, many new innovations come out to change the way we drive be that through hands-off technology or cutting-edge assistance systems which make driving safer than ever before.

But what could drivers expect over the next few years and how could they edit the way we go from A to B? Here, we’re going to go through some of the advancements that could be on the horizon.

Car interiors you can move around

As manufacturers push towards more autonomous driving, many are dreaming of a point where car cabins can be used more as lounges rather than places where you’d be driving. If the car were to drive itself, then this would free up the interior to be used for a variety of different functions, such as a working or sleeping space.

Though very much just a concept for now, the idea is certainly an attractive one. Who wouldn’t want to kick back and relax while the car handles the driving?

Clever tyre technology

Tyres are something we tend to forget about. However, they’re also a key component in how a car works, with these circles of rubber being the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road.

However, tyre technology is set to rapidly change over the next few years. We’ve already seen examples of this with the Citroen Oli concept, which uses tyres that are made entirely from sustainable or recycled materials. They can even be renewed, extending their usable lifetime.

Improved electric car range

We’ve already seen electric car ranges extend massively over recent years, so it’s more than likely that this trajectory will continue upwards. These days, we’re already seeing cars that can near the 400-mile mark in between trips to the plug, so it’s not a long stretch to think that this will continue.

In fact, the new Lucid Air has a claimed range of up to 500 miles, so we could be nearing the 600 to 700-mile mark before too long.

Greater use of recycled materials

Today, more manufacturers are using eco-friendly and recycled materials in their cars. Volvo, for instance, has already made a firm commitment to use Vegan-friendly materials in its cars and continues to blend these in its vehicles to good effect.

Many companies are also using recycled plastics or those recovered from the oceans to use in the creation of certain components like floor mats, too.

Introduction of E-Fuels

E-Fuels have become a big talking point in the motoring industry, with many sectors seeing them as a great option for future vehicles. Porsche, incidentally, is already committing a lot of funds to the fuels and has already set up its own manufacturing plant in Chile.

Though the future of e-fuels remains quite uncertain, it’s definitely yet another option for cleaner mobility in the future.

Higher levels of autonomous driving

Autonomous driving has become a burning topic of conversation in recent years. The idea that cars could drive themselves seems like something out of science fiction, but it’s a technology which is quickly being developed by car companies.

More recently, Ford has showcased its own ‘hands-off’ driving system and BMW has done the same, too, with the German company's technology able to make the car change lanes autonomously as well.
