Why choose an electric Volkswagen?

Volkswagen is one of the world’s most successful car companies, and is now the most popular car brand here in the UK, taking up even more market share than the likes of Ford and Vauxhall.

While it’s been models like the Polo and Golf that have been Volkswagen’s bread and butter, increasingly it’s Volkswagen’s electric models that are grabbing the limelight more. While this German firm started relatively early in 2013 with EVs, producing cars like the e-Up! and e-Golf, Volkswagen has taken things up a level more recently with its new ‘ID” sub-brand for EVs.

These are electric models built around a specific platform (and not one shared with petrol and diesel cars), with the advantage to this being greater flexibility when it comes to interior space, battery capacity and technology – all areas where Volkswagen’s ID models have really excelled.

Starting with the ID.3 hatchback, Volkswagen’s EV line-up has now expanded to include the ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs, along with the ultra-cool ID.Buzz. There’s plenty more in the pipeline too.

What is the warranty and breakdown cover like on a Volkswagen? What does it cover?

As standard, new Volkswagens are supplied with a three-year warranty. There is no mileage limit in those first two years either, and only in the third year is there an overall 60,000-mile cap.

The warranty is comprehensive in case of any manufacturing defects too. Volkswagen’s electric cars go a step further, though, with the manufacturer guaranteeing the high-voltage battery for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes soonest.

As for roadside assistance, all new Volkswagens come with one-year free breakdown cover. However, on Volkswagen’s electric ‘ID’ models (as well as the firm’s flagship Touareg SUV), these models come with three years’ complimentary cover.

What are the key selling points for Volkswagen?

Choice is absolutely key to Volkswagen’s success, as while many other manufacturers currently just offer just the odd EV, the German firm already has four battery-powered models in its line-up.

These range from the more affordable ID.3 hatchback, as well as the ID.4 SUV that’s selling especially well. Volkswagen also offers the coupe-styled ID.5 SUV, along with the funky, retro ID.Buzz which is creating a real stir in the electric car market.

As we’ve mentioned, Volkswagen has a real advantage when it comes to the use of its electric car-specific platform. Known as MEB, these underpinnings are already widely used by VW, but also in various models from Audi, Cupra and Skoda, as well as Ford soon.

The key advantage to this is the packaging, with the firm essentially being able to engineer cars purely for EV-use, meaning the battery can be placed low to not intrude in the passenger room, as well as freeing up masses of cabin space. Volkswagen has certainly made the most of this.

While other manufacturers' top-end EVs are out of reach to many, Volkswagen’s focus on more affordable and accessible electric cars is welcome. Each model is available in a variety of configurations to suit a wide audience, while Volkswagen has recently confirmed a new EV supermini called the ID.2, which will dramatically expand its portfolio further.

Electric car model highlights. What’s in the range and what’s popular?

Volkswagen currently offers four EVs in its ‘ID’ line-up. Highlights of each are as follows.

ID.3

It was the ID.3 that kicked off not only Volkswagen’s new electric car offensive, but the wider Volkswagen Group too. A similar size to the firm’s well-loved Golf, this hatchback is practical, good to drive and able to travel up to 265 miles on a current charge. A mildly updated model is due shortly.

ID.4

SUVs are hugely popular these days, and especially in the electric car market, which helps to explain why Volkswagen’s ID.4 is doing so well. This practical, family-friendly model is packed with technology and available in an especially wide range of derivatives. Offering a range of up to 328 miles, it’s also available in a sporty GTX configuration with four-wheel-drive.

ID.5

If you want your electric SUV to look a bit sportier, you should take a look at the Volkswagen ID.5. While based on the ID.4, it brings a far more dynamic roofline owing to its coupe-esque styling. Only available in the larger 77kWh battery, it’s able to travel for up to 328 miles, owing to its more aerodynamic shape.

ID.Buzz

The real talking point in Volkswagen’s electric car range, however, is the ID.Buzz. Inspired by the firm’s legendary Microbus, it’s the newest addition and is going down a storm with the firm’s very loyal following. Majoring on style – especially when configured in a two-tone paint scheme, it’s also incredibly practical as a family car. Currently only available as a five-seater, a longer seven-seater model is in the pipeline too.
