Cast your mind back a couple of decades and above all else, it was Subaru’s reputation for rallying and motorsport that was getting it noticed. But over the years the Japanese firm has moved away from that and instead dedicated its focus to SUVs.
These rugged and purposeful models have developed a loyal following, and though Subarus don’t sell in huge numbers in the UK, they are well worth considering. Particularly so if you value having four-wheel-drive and the ability to drive in poor conditions. No wonder they sell particularly well in rural settings.
The last few years has seen Subaru expand its remit and introduce self-charging hybrid models, which the firm calls e-Boxer. But it’s now taken a step further with the launch of its first EV – the Solterra. Named after the Latin words for ‘sun’ and ‘earth’, it’s been designed alongside Toyota.
Across all of Subaru’s models, it offers a new vehicle warranty lasting three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes sooner. All vehicle bodywork is also covered by a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty while the paintwork is warranted for three years.
On Subaru’s e-Boxer hybrid models and the electric Solterra, the lithium-ion battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, again, whichever comes sooner.
The firm also offers a three-year recovery and assistance programme in case of any breakdowns, which runs throughout the warranty period and is valid in the UK and across Europe.

Subaru has earned a fantastic reputation for its cars off-roading pedigree, and that remains a major selling point. In fact, all of Subaru’s new models are currently sold with four-wheel-drive as standard, making them ideal for those needing that extra traction and capability that comes as part of using this type of drivetrain.
The electric Solterra doesn’t deviate from that, either, and has been proven to give confidence and control, whatever the weather condition. A dedicated X-Mode all-wheel-drive system can help navigate a variety of terrains with ease, such as deep mud, snow and even steep, slippery slopes.
Subarus are also known for being sturdy and built to last. It’s not uncommon for the brand’s models to clock up hundreds of thousands of miles under their belt, while still feeling solid and reliable.
Safety has also become an area where Subaru has really established itself as a leader. Through its ‘EyeSight’ and Subaru Safety Sense driver assistance technologies, its cars are perfect for keeping you and your occupants safe. It’s shown particularly in the Solterra, which includes features such as autonomous front and rear emergency braking, safe exit assist and a 360-degree panoramic camera.
Subaru currently offers just a single electric model – the Solterra. Here’s what you need to know about it.
Named after the Latin words for ‘sun’ and ‘earth’, the Solterra was a model designed alongside Toyota, which sells its version as the bZ4X. During the development, Subaru’s expertise was creating the all-wheel-drive and traction settings, with this model proving supremely capable in challenging conditions.
The Solterra also boasts a purposeful look with its thick plastic cladding, while offering a comfortable and solid driving experience, whether you’re on road or off it. Unlike the Toyota, this Subaru is sold purely in four-wheel-drive model, where it offers 214bhp, as well as a claimed range of up to 289 miles.
